Reimagining dock floats to be foam-free.
The Problem
Polystyrene foam dock billets are a big problem. They break apart, pollute our waters, and stick around forever, making their way into marine life and onto our plates. It’s time for a change.
The Solution
Our idea? Use existing mycelium technology—the root structure of mushrooms—and upcycled 55 gallon barrels to create dock billets that are strong, eco-friendly, and biodegradable.
Why It Matters
By replacing polystyrene with mycelium, we’re helping keep Maine’s coasts clean and protecting marine life for generations to come.

Energy Project Pitch Competition
The Energy Project is an annual competition that challenges young innovators to tackle real-world environmental problems with creative solutions. Winning the competition not only validated Refoam Maine’s vision but also provided the crucial $15,000 startup grant to turn their mushroom-powered idea into reality.
Our founders
Laura Riordan, Tula Prindiville, Olivia Huard, and Maggie Blood co-founded Refoam Maine in the Spring of 2023 to protect their community and the shorelines they call home. Motivated by the growing environmental impact of polystyrene pollution, they wanted to create a sustainable alternative that could make a real difference. Along the way, they fell in love with the magic of mushrooms, learning about the power of mycelium to transform waste into innovation. By speaking with experts in sustainability and engaging with their local community, they developed a solution and a shared passion for protecting Maine’s waters. Their innovative work won the Energy Project Pitch Competition, earning them a $15,000 grant to kickstart their vision.
